Research Areas Lausanne – Sion

The Research Faculty of the Jules Gonin Eye Hospital in Lausanne and the Institute for Research in Ophthalmology (IRO) of Sion represent a single scientific center under the responsibility of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Lausanne, bringing together the scientific expertise of a large number of researchers.

Fields of research :

  • Identification of genes implicated in ocular diseases and gene therapy (Ocular genetics)
  • Stem cell biology
  • Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
  • Retinitis pigmentosa (RP)
  • Adult and pediatric ocular oncology
  • Ocular immunology and inflammation
  • Glaucoma
  • Vitreoretinal Surgery
  • Corneal Diseases
  • Neuro-ophthalmology

New hope with new areas of research

A turning point has been reached in the combat against severe visual impairment and blindness, with the emergence of new areas of investigative science such as ocular genetics. This field offers new prospects in both the prevention and cure of hitherto incurable ocular diseases affecting all age groups: children, adults and seniors. Ocular genetics serves to localize and identifiy the genes involved in ocular diseases in order to develop substitution techniques or repair deficient genes.

Identifying the genes responsible, understanding their function and using them to slow disease progression or create a cure, represents the primary aim of research in Lausanne and Sion.
